Coco Chanel once said “Fashion is not something that exists only in dresses. Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”

At the end of its journey clothing and fabric scrap takes up a huge amount of landfill. Add to that the environmental costs of packaging, transport, color dying, printing, and laundry and it creates a dangerous and enormous carbon footprint. This is the reason fashion designed with recycled materials comes as a welcome new fashion trend. There are countless ways to reduce your fashion carbon footprint and rebuild the economy. The choice is ours to support local designers and in turn save the planet and create jobs.

“Several studies have shown that buying from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community and creating jobs. Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases requiring less transportation and generally set up shop in town or city centers as opposed to developing on the fringe. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution. Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally and in our communities, provide the most jobs to residents.“ Source: sconnect.org

RecycledForDancing.com designs by Deborah Paulino are collectable works of art that show the nature of transformation, and draw attention to the human connection to one another and the environment. Combined are an array of fabrics from different eras and areas of the world that are either surplus, recycled or vintage.

The reconstruction process starts with hand washing the fabrics in oxygen bleach, then looking at the fabric, shape, color, then sketching out a design. Often several pieces are used to make one piece of clothing and it can take time, sometimes weeks searching through thrift shops, to find the right elements that compliment each other. Once all the elements are in place the construction takes place, then fittings and finishing touches - sometimes tailoring alterations, other times embellishments such as beading, appliqué, or distressing. When the garment is finished and ready for retail, it is then steam cleaned for any leftover dust and allergens and de-wrinkle and refresh the fabric. The results are one of a kind sincere works of art that are well-made, timeless, and fun to wear.

We will all share in the creation of a new vision
of an Earth Restored and a World at Peace.

We are proud to welcome all others in the global community to
join us in creating the Kindred Spirits of the Emerald Forest of
Sustainable Communities, and an EcoVillage
right here in Northern California.

All are welcome to come who come in good spirit.
This is just one small branch on a very big Tree.

All friendly voices do need to be heard and there is a place for all
that is good and right to be included.

We will meet right out in front of the
Jack London Lodge restaurant area right in the middle
of the tiny town Glen Ellen and that is just about 45 miles
north of the golden gate bridge.

One topic will be the significance of the spirit of place that all
people have been wrestling with, and how we connect up into community.

Who are we in relation to our place and our community
and how to do we sustain that and leave something to future
generations.

Just a friendly gathering of Kindred Spirits working towards a
collective vision of an Earth Restored and a World at Peace in all
different ways.

It's all to be Positive and Constructive.
Collaboration and Companionship is Key.

You are all welcome to share some of
your own most elegant wishes and ideas on Community.

This is the place to make your Contributions known and I want you
all to be there with us.

This is what the real Magic is all about:

We can make it all happen by combining our own intentions to
collaborate together and to start making things happen.

Hi, I'm seeking like minds.

I grew up designing and making my own clothes since a little girl, and apprenticed with Mirage in Melbourne, Australia’s largest CMT house for major Oz designers; before studying fine art at Heatherleys in London. I was also sponsored by Mirage and a runner-up in the Australian Fashion Awards. Then I traveled and lived in a few different countries and got into planet activism and events, then running an online arts community, then helping manage festivals. Now current fashion has caught up with the designs in my head and the ideals in my heart and I recently returned to designing eco-friendly wearable art.

The stuff I’m now designing and reconstructing are Eco Couture, individual one-off’s made from recycled and vintage fabrics. My design skills are coming back and improving with each collection batch. Sketches and photos of recent experiments are up at http://www.recycledfordancing.com plus I already have clothes in 2 boutiques, addresses are on the site under Retail Stores.

I also do custom stage gear; before working on festivals full time I actually did costumes for Music TV dancers, musicians, and theatre. I had a few designs on national TV way back when, on long running music TV show called Countdown. And I designed costumes for a whole Bertolt Brecht play at the Chelsea Playhouse in London, plus whole wardrobes for nightclub dancers and contemporary cabaret, and fire dancers for festivals in Byron Bay.

My current designs are inspired by San Francisco and Japanese street fashion, as well as European Couture and Burning Man. For me it is sculpture using textiles with a wearable framework and chaos, I take something that I see and mix it with something else that I see, each piece inspiring the next piece. Anyway take a peek at http://www.recycledfordancing.com for art’s sake, and keep me in mind when you are thinking of new additions to your wardrobe or recycling your wardrobe.
Many readers have mistakenly, and probably due to a cursory reading of the material below, assumed that Mother Earth hints at our destruction as a species in 3-4 years. This is not the case. All She seems to be saying is that around that period the warning that She is giving now will manifest in events that will painfully make it clear that there is something really "big, unusual, and important originating from the level of nature that could potentially have a disastrous effect on the human race. At that moment, the Term "Mother" will take on more of a "real significance" and many will finally suspect and realize that Mother Nature is a BEING of Supreme Divine intelligence of a level that we, Homo sapiens, cannot even remotely fathom. We will start becoming acutely aware that Mother Nature is not a thoughtless, non-conscious machine that has, up to now, obsessed all of our scientist using their restricted intellect, in their attempts to understand Her intricate laws and ways of operations and forces, more often that not in order to gain active control over Her, and skew Her for their short-term benefits. So please do not take this a a message that wants to instill defeatism (if you believe that that Gigantic consciousness would send a direct message at all) and fear in your soul, for that will feed anger and rejection.

'Time 4 Hemp' is the name of the television series I created in the early 1990's. You can locate the web site at:
http://www.Time4Hemp.com

There you will find the list of guests who appeared on the series when it was first produced includes: Willie Nelson, Tim Leary, Kevin Zeese, and all the founders of the American Hemp Movement.

I am one of 17 people who, in 1991, wrote the California Hemp Initiative (CHI) allowing people who need the use of hemp (slang termed: marijuana) for medical reasons to grow 6 plants or less in their own homes with out fear of prosecution.

The 17 of us who wrote this initiative then recruited an army of volunteers to gather enough signatures to get the CHI onto the voting ballot in 1992. California voters overwhelmingly supported CHI and it became state law shortly there after. I created 'Time 4 Hemp' as a way to bring attention to the CHI.

A copy of the CHI can be reviewed on the web site as can free short video downloads from each interview. You can also freely download the complete audio of each interview should you like. You can also download 4 video clips from my involvement in the Smoked Marijuana Study at UCLA funded by the US government if you have time for a quick chuckle. I am the only person in the world ever to be filmed in a study of that nature.

The 'Time 4 Hemp' weekly WebCast will broadcast LIVE, at High Noon once a week through the internet. Each program will then be edited and archived so anyone wanting to listen to it - at anytime - can do so.

We intend to rock the world (as always) with the message of:
"Hemp for Paper, Fiber, Fuel and Medication".

With that said, I'd like to invite you to listen in and be an ACTIVE AUDIENCE. The whole idea of broadcasting live is to give people around the world the chance to ask questions of each guest. Either through telephone (we'll have an 800 number) or IM.

I'll be posting up-dates about the series through my Time_4_Hemp tribe site.

If you'd like to be notified by e-mail of the first live broadcast, let me know.

You can send me a message through my Time4Hemp.com web sit at: Casper@Time4Hemp.com with the subject line:
I Want 2 Take Time 4 Hemp - NOW!

the people who work at the bead shop in your neighborhood understand that if your family comes in, they must not reveal, under any circumstances, how much money you spent last time you came in.

Even though you're the only adult who lives at your house, you hide your craft supply purchases so that people won't ask you about them.

Sometimes, as you're falling asleep, you get an idea for a pattern or design, and you can't go to sleep until you get up and draw it so that you don't forget the important details.

You dream that you went to the bead store in the night, took what you wanted, and left the owner some money and a note, thinking, "She''ll understand that I needed this right away."

When you see someone wearing or using something beautiful that they obviously made, you can't resist the urge to ask them about it, and are sincerely fascinated by what they tell you.

You don't allow yourself to bring your debit card to the craft store so that you'll really stay within you're budget.

greetings everyone, I was wondering if anyone out there was interested in a discussion of sustainable practices related to issues of fashion and clothing. Just so happens this is my thesis topic. I've got some loooonnnnng posts to other tribes specific to fashion and reconstructed clothing, but I'm interested in hearing the thoughts of those of you out there who are *not* necessarily into 'fashion' (in fact, you may even find it distasteful) but still like to present yourself with style. Or maybe you couldnt care less, but all of us have to wear clothes....

here's a fun quote:

“…there is a complex issue to contend with in the fact that the term eco-fashion embodies the incompatible agendas of sustainability and consumerism: eco-fashion as oxymoron. Therefore, eco-fashion has to involve a radical rethinking of the "grounds" of fashion and ecology in order to deliver sustainable solutions that can only ever partially arrive with recycling. ”
any thoughts? anyone interested in further discussion?

I have a passion for life - for my life, my kids ’lives, and all of our lives …so I have to share my passion and my vision (that follows) with you …hoping that it might lead you to more hope-filled, joyful and sustainable lives.

First, for perspective, the next paragraph is the important part of world history in a single paragraph. Then, I hope to enlist you in joining the Aikido Activism Movement, a movement that can face today ’s deepest challenges with the most empowered approach to change.

THE IMPORTANT PART OF WORLD HISTORY IN A PARAGRAPH
Humanity has passed from a first great era of primarily physically-mediated conflict to one today of primarily economically-mediated conflict (see for example, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, by John Perkins - http://www.tinyurl.com/4tebc or http://www.tinyurl.com/5t8j9 ) and NOW we can and must advance to an era of primarily reason-mediated conflict. In each of the earlier eras people by and large did the best they could with what they had (as they will today and in the future only now with much better tools for communication which MUST be used for increased understanding, which -- fortunately -- can naturally translate to caring). The problem of capitalism today was less a problem when it was invented as a solution to feudal imperialism (with regular physical conflict). Economic imperialism has yet further removed the suffering from view of the beneficiaries of economic imperialism; but, in order to link with economic subjects, a global network has been built that can actually be used to bring people together -- and while inter-tribal, international, and intercorporate engagements in ages of primarily physically-mediated and primarily economically-mediated conflict have a history of being quite exploitive (if not deadly), engagements in the dawning age of reason can evolve to be much more like a dance, yet still a dance of joy or survival depending on one's viewpoint. The key should be seeing the power of inclusion, which can bring joy and unity -- replacing profit maximization with fruition maximization as a necessity for sustainability/survival and joy in a globalizing era.

My passions have been channeled into writing about a systematic solution to this systemic problem of today: that corporations do both the most good and the most bad, but it is their ability to hide bad things in the complexity of corporate behavior and in the popular but treacherous myth they promulgate -- "greed is good" -- that has led to essentially all major world problems.

Efforts to overpower corporations with grass roots public fervor or death-of-their-excesses by a thousand cuts from non-profits or NGOs appear to be having little effect, so why not turn the tools of corporations (and their economic might) against their regressive practices? This is Aikido Activism, my passion that I hope will become yours in a budding movement that everyone should want to join - and that anyone and everyone with a computer and Internet access is empowered to advance by sharing parts of the puzzle (how Aikido Activism can be applied in their field and applying it), supporting other Aikido Activists, getting the word out electronically, etc.

Change is possible. Find out who some Aikido Activists are who are working for progressive transformation of outworn social traditions –and please share any comments, ideas, connections, at the new wiki-website http://aikidoactivism.xwiki.com/ where there is a growing amount of information begun to be collected and organized online to advance the Aikido Progressive Movement – to understand our past and build a promising opportunity for our future.

Has anyone had luck with Glad Press-N-Seal in the freezer? Anyway, I would basically be re-using the entire package, since the cardboard label is simple origami, held together by tabs rather than glue. The other side of the label is plain brown, so I could even make some other food, label and date it, and fold it in reverse.

See the .jpgs I scanned of the SeaPak garlic herb shrimp packaging in the tribe photos. I guess I could even use the label as a template and make my own.

Recently i found some pastel cotton yarn in a thrift store, and i'm not really big on pink, baby blue, yellow or white as colors, so i plan to tye dye them.

I've done this before, you can get the dye in most any decent art store, and if you are in Asheville there is a lovely craft store that caters to folx who like natural stuff. With this kind of dye you need to soak it in soda ash first. Oh, back up, first thing you do is unwind it from the ball, and make it in to a skein. I wrapped mine around a oversized book. Then put a string or twist tie through the loop, opposite of each other. You can also put rubber bands around the outside (after the twistties or string) to keep the dye going in that area. Mixes it up a bit.

Once its secure, and you've soaked it, then you can dye it. I think it has to sit 24 hours with the dye on it. In the past i then washed it in the washing machine, and hung it to dry. Now if you didn't put rubber bands on before, i'd do it before you wash it. Its hard enough untangling the bugger, making it back into a ball.

I imagine you can also dye with natural dyes. Or you can buy your cotton yarn in a place like ac moore or micheals, you can even get your dye there i think. But of course the more eco and recycled you go the better.

can you use menstrual blood as fertilizer? how is it applied (directly or diluted?) and how often should it be given to plants? i've read that plants love it, but is there any sort of evidence backing this up? has anyone grown plants that were given menstrual blood vs. no fertilizer side by side to see which one does better? how potent of a fertilizer is it? what exact nutrients does it give to a plant? there seems to be no information on this sort anywhere online. i'd rather not buy fertilizer if it's something my body already produces.

www.area709.com is a new site based out of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. We are a collective of passionate people who want to create a bubble of creative energy online. We are slowly gathering members from across North America, and are now beginning to focus on the visual arts aspect of our site.

If anyone knows of anyone who might be interested in having their portfolio on the site it would be free for them other than covering their own server space and bandwidth (about $18/month). We are looking for artists that have a passion for electronica, and who are professional, productive, friendly and talented.

There is no limit to the medium of creative expression, so anything goes right now!

area709 is also an emerging production collective, our first two events have been extremely successful and very well recieved (reviews and video footage are on the site). We are pushing the envelope here in Alberta by re-establishing the art-party experience. Already on our team we have one of the best projection visualists in Alberta, Byron Pope, and the legendary talent behind the Team Psyence decore Darren Schweitzer.

Our goal when we host an event is to offer those who attend a chance to see really stunning art and visuals as well as hear intelligent, beautiful music.

Anyone with any ideas feel free to post them in this thread, or thoughts of who we might contact. Our site this month will be at 100,000 hits already and it is only barely 2 months old so we know we are onto something!

I forgot to mention that artists featured at our events would be brought in for the event. That is obvious for performers, but that applies to painters or other mediums of expression as well as their art.

Oh yeah and our events are not limited to Calgary, we have an event forming in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico in February 2005. The venue: Hotel California....how sweet is that?

Please feel free to send me a message with any thoughts!!!!

I'm a preschool teacher so I know about a few places where you can pick up recycled stuff for art projects.

For example I picked up at RAFT (Resource Area for Teachers) in Santa Clara scrap fabric, cardboard tubing, I learned that plastic cups (of a specific plastic content) can be used as shrinkie dinks, etc...
http://www.raft.net/
Materials at raft are surplus items donated by over 1,000 local businesses and range from cardboard tubes to computers.

There's also SCRAP (Scroungers Center for Reusable Art Parts) in San Francisco. http://scrap-sf.org/ The founders of SCRAP converted an old warehouse into a sort of holding pen for fabric, glass, wood, plastic, cardboard, tile, and paper for the express purpose of inspiring the artist in you. (And to demonstrate a cool recycling option.)

on the East Bay I also heard about (but never been) to the Center for Creative Reuse off of Ashby and San Pablo.
